Greens target win to narrow gap

Floriana will be all out in search of the three points as they take on Qormi on Sunday at the Hibernians Stadium as they aim at narrowing the gap with leaders Valletta.

In fact, following the Citizens’ goalless draw with Marsaxlokk on Saturday, Floriana could narrow the gap with the leaders to ten points. The Greens are coming from three successive wins over Marsaxlokk, Hamrun Spartans and Vittoriosa Stars. Three games in which they scored twelve goals and suffered two.

Qormi are currently third from bottom on fourteen points and hope to collect precious points from this game in order to secure a top six finish. They earned two points in two draws with Tarxien and Sliema in their last two outings.

Roderick Sammut and Joseph Farrugia are ruled out for Qormi but Stefan Giglio could be back. For Floriana, Kiril Dzhorov and Christian Cassar are both recovering from injuries.

In the first round, Floriana registered a narrow 1-0 win.

Meanwhile in the first match, Hibernians will be hoping to avenge their first round defeat as they take on Vittoriosa Stars in a clash between the bottom two teams. The Stars registered their first Premier League win, defeating Hibernians 2-0.

Hibs currently lie on the 12-point mark, five ahead of Vittoriosa. After holding Marsaxlokk in a draw, the Paolites returned to winning ways as they beat Hamrun Spartans 4-2. With another three points on Sunday, they would move eight points clear.

However the Stars’ morale is high following a fine 3-0 win over Marsaxlokk in the U*BET FA Trophy second round on Wednesday. A win which lifted the team’s spirit following a heavy 1-6 defeat to Floriana in their last league outing.

Jeffrey Chetcuti, Steve Wellman, Edison Luis Dos Santos will all be back for Vittoriosa while Alan Tabone should make his debut after joining the club on loan from Birkirkara. Matt Clarke is in doubt for the Paolites while Triston Caruana is ruled out injured.
