The Hamrun Spartans FC Youth Nursery in collaboration with the Hamrun Local Council are organising the 10th edition of the Tony Bajada Memorial to be held between Wednesday 20th and Tuesday 26th April 2011 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
In this year’s edition, the Italian football school of US Triestina Calcio will be participating in the 1997 category. The Italian team will be competing for the prestigious Tony Bajada Challenge Cup dedicated to the nursery founder, the late Tony Bajada.
As usual, the tournament has attracted a good number of participants as 26 teams from 16 nurseries from Malta have applied to take part. The participating nurseries for this year are: B’Kara, Floriana, Hamrun Sp, Kirkop Utd., Lija-Iklin, Melita, Mosta, Paola H., Pieta H, San Gwann, St.Andrew’s, St.Patrick, Sliema W., Tarxien R., Valletta and Zurrieq
In total, 63 matches will be played over five days. Over 350 players in five categories (2004, 2002, 2000, 1997 and Girls 1995) will participate in this event and will have the opportunity to play on the turf pitch of a stadium in which top local league matches are played.
The program kicks off on Wednesday 20th April with the celebration of Holy Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church at 8:15am, followed by a march pass to the Victor Tedesco Stadium and a symbolic opening. The first matches start at 9:30 am.
This is also the only tournament organised locally by a football nursery in which the results of all games are regularly updated throughout the days of the tournament on the nursery website www.hamrunnursery.com.
The slogan for this year’s edition is: “GOAL – Good Opportunity to Appreciate & Learn”. The tournament itself will be an opportunity for all players to appreciate the dedication of all those involved in teaching them the beautiful game. These include their parents, match officials, football association officials and football coaches. They also include nursery officials of all teams, most of whom work on a voluntary basis, in order to give them the opportunity to learn and develop their talent in the game of football whilst providing a healthy and friendly environment.
The Hamrun Spartans FC Youth Nursery wish to publicly express their gratitude to the tournament’s sponsors – Globalair Travel Limited, Farsons plc and von Brockdorff Imports Ltd – who made it possible for these young footballers and their parents to enjoy this memorable week, during the Easter holidays. The organising committee would also like to show their appreciation to the Bajada family, Hamrun Spartans FC Executive Committee, Hamrun Sports Complex plc, The Youth FA, the Amateur, Youth and Grassroots Committee and all the participating nurseries for their support.
