Zejtun, Rabat cross swords in Division II/III Knock-Out final

A big crowd is expected at the Hibernians Stadium on Sunday as BOV Second Division champions and holders Zejtun Corinthians cross swords with Rabat Ajax in the final of the Quick-Keno Second & Third Division Knock-Out, kick-off at 17:00.

The Corinthians, who defeated Gharghur in last season’s final, will be hoping to crown another excellent season with the double after winning the Second Division title comfortably, eleven points ahead of the same Rabat Ajax.

In the Knock-Out, Zejtun won Group 2 after defeating Santa Lucia 2-0, Gudja United 2-0 and Gzira United 2-1. In the quarter-finals, they beat Mgarr United 3-0 before defeating rivals Naxxar Lions 2-0 in the semi-finals.

But Zejtun’s task will be no easy one as Rabat Ajax will be all out to finish the season on a high note by winning this competition which will be held for the last time as next season all clubs from the Premier League to Division 3 and also Gozitan clubs will be taking part in the FA Trophy.

Rabat finished second in the BOV Second Division with 41 points from 22 matches. They had the best attack with 45 goals and the second best defence, suffering just twelve goals.

The Magpies won Group 1 in the Knock-Out following a 3-1 win over Mdina Knights, a 2-1 win over Ghaxaq and a goalless draw with Mellieha. They defeated Birzebbuga St. Peter’s 3-0 in the quarter-finals and St. Venera Lightnings 2-1 in the semi-finals.

Rabat and Zejtun met twice this season with the latter winning the first round clash 1-0. The second round match ended in a goalless draw.
