Eternal rivals Valletta, Floriana face each other in BOV Super Cup

The BOV Super Cup will be at stake on Tuesday as BOV Premier League champions Valletta take on neighbours Floriana – winners of the U*BET FA Trophy, kick-off at 20:30.

The Citizens target their ninth Super Cup win after defeating Birkirkara 3-2 after extra-time in last season’s final. On the other hand, Floriana will be hoping to win the competition for the second time after winning it only once. Ironically, in 1994, the Greens had defeated Valletta 4-1 to win the competition for the first time.

Since the FA Trophy final which saw the Greens prevailing with a late goal by Ivan Woods, both Floriana and Valletta hardly had any break this summer. In fact, they had to start the pre-season training almost immediately due to their commitments in Europe.

The two teams took part in the Euro Cup with Valletta winning the direct clash 2-1, winning the competition following a 2-2 draw with Birkirkara. The Citizens then took part in the UEFA Champions League, defeating SP Tre Fiori of San Marino in the first qualifying round but losing 2-4 to FK Ekranas of Lithuania in the second qualifying round.

Floriana, on the other hand, suffered a heavy 0-8 to AEK Larnaca in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League although they did much better in Cyprus, despite losing 1-0.

Since then, Floriana secured the services of goalkeeper Manuel Bartolo – formerly of Birkirkara – from Msida St. Joseph and midfielder John Mintoff from Sliema Wanderers. Nigerian-born striker Boris Odwong also joined the club. Julio Alcose and goalkeeper Matthew Towns were released. Towns ironically joined Valletta.

For Valletta, Terence Scerri and Jamie Pace are both suspended.

Due to the ongoing works at the West Stand, the Millennium Stand Sector D will be reserved for Valletta FC supporters while Sector F of the Millennium Stand will be reserved for Floriana FC supporters.

Tickets will be available from the Ticket Booths of the National Stadium for €6 – Adults, €4 – holders of Karta Anzjan and €1 – children under the age of 12. The four ticket booths will open at 18:30.

The VIP Area will be in Sector E of the Millennium Stand and only those accredited for this area will be allowed.
