Excess RP Bidnija retained the National First Division Futsal Championship title, after winning the second Final play-off against Naxxar Motors, yesterday evening at the Corradino Pavilion.
In front of a sizeable crowd, Excess came from behind to level the score just one minute before the final whistle, with protagonist goalkeeper Matthew Xerxen, scoring a great goal following some last minute flying goalkeeper tactics. The game ended 2 -2 and Excess then went on to beat Naxxar Motors in a penalty shoot out, 4-2. Excess had won the first final play-off last Monday, 5-3.
The Championship title crowned a memorable season for Excess RP Bidnija, which saw them topping the league, losing only one game in the process and with the best goal average. The amalgamation between title holders ZC Excess and RP Bidnija just after last season, prior to the UEFA Futsal Cup participation, proved to be the winning formula with player coach Florin Anton – also named as MFA Futsal Player of the Year for the past two seasons – once again leading the team, supported by Club President Mario Vella and Team Manager, Nathaniel Jones.
The Futsal Season comes with the Knock Out Final where Excess RP Bidnija face Paola Downtown. The KO Final will be played on 4th June 2012, at the Corradino Pavilion.
Futsal Malta Association (FMA) now take over the organisation of the National Futsal League as from next season. Member Clubs have up to 15th June to notify their intention to participate in the coming Futsal League.
