UEFA announced that Birkirkara FC will be hosting one of the UEFA Women’s Champions League Qualifying Round mini-tournaments in two months’ time. This was revealed during a press conference in which Minister for Finance, the Economy and Investment Tonio Fenech announced that the government will be supporting the organisation of this tournament with a grant of €45,000 through the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund.
The draws for the qualifying round will be held on June 27.
The Minister expressed his satisfaction for the fact that Birkirkara’s bid was accepted by UEFA and said that hopefully this tournament will help women’s football in Malta gain more interest. He added that the visit by three foreign teams will contribute to sports tourism.
Tonio Fenech explained that this grant is also meant to encourage the general public for this event as entrance will be free. He said that the Good Causes Fund contributed €350,000 to various sports including football, rugby, cycling and swimming among others over the past year.
Meanwhile Birkirkara FC President Joe Zammit thanked Minister Tonio Fenech for his support to Malta and The club’s bid to host the tournament.
