AME Cup: Balzan lead the way in Group B

After defeating Tarxien Rainbows on penalties, Balzan FC registered their second win in group B of the AME Cup as they beat Mosta 4-2. Tarxien, on the other hand, beat Hamrun Spartans on penalties.

Balzan lead the way in Group B with five points followed by Mosta and Tarxien on 3 and Hamrun 1.

In the first match, Balzan beat Mosta 4-2 in an entertaining game.

Former Floriana striker Andre Grabowski put Balzan ahead on the 1st minute but goals by Malta international striker Daniel Bogdanovic on 13 minutes and Firas Aboulezz in 22 minutes made it 2-1 for Mosta.

Two minutes in the second half, Matthew Mendy equalised for Balzan. Renato Garcia Conceicao scored Balzan’s third goal on 55 minutes and Andre Grabowski sealed the issue with a fourth goal on 71 minutes.

The second game between Tarxien Rainbows and Hamrun Spartans ended in a 2-2 draw at the end if the ninety minutes with the Rainbows claiming two points as they won 4-3 on penalties.

New signing Terence Vella put the spartans ahead on the 9th minute. Mark Tanti levelled matters on 45 minutes and James Shead made it 2-1 for Danilo Doncic’s side on 71 minutes. In the penalty shoot-out, Orosco Anonam, Carlo Mamo, Luiz Romulo de Castro and Brandon Manzonelli scored for Tarxien, Terence Vella, Ljubomir Vitanov and Massimo Grima scored for Hamrun. Angelo Yoshev and Adrian Olgrov missed the to penalties for Hamrun.

On Monday, Tarxien take on Mosta while Balzan face Hamrun, kick-off times 18:30 and 20:30.

In group A on Sunday, Rabat Ajax meet Birkirkara at 18:30 and Qormi take on Sliema at 20:30.
