Mosta in pole position to win Gammari Muscat Tournament

The ‘Gammari’ Muscat’ Mosta Tournament kicked off last Monday as Premier League sides Mosta FC, hosts, Qormi FC and Melita FC along with Second Division side Msida St. Joseph do battle at the Charles Abela Memorial Stadium.

Some good crowds have been present to watch the first two days of the quadrangular tournament and day three tomorrow is anxiously awaited to determine this year’s winning team.

Hosts Mosta are in driving seat with two wins from two matches, beating Msida St. Joseph 6-0 on the first day and on Wednesday had the better of Qormi winning 3-2. The Blues have built a new squad for this year’s Premier League campaign and are considered by many to be among the top teams this season.

Wednesday’s win over Qormi saw The Blues come from behind to win the match that puts them on maximum points, two points ahead of second-placed Melita. Jonathan Bondin had put Qormi 1-0 up, but two quick goals from Daniel Oswachi and Daniel Mitev turned the result in favour of Mosta. Firas Aboulezz added another for Steve D’Amato’s side before Qormi made the score more respectable scoring from the penalty spot through substitute Joseph Chetcuti.

In another match on Wednesday, Melita, who drew 1-1 with Qormi in the first game, beat Msida St. Joseph 1-0 to move to second place. The Saints improved from their first outing and gave newly-promoted Melita a hard match.

The final day of the tournament on Friday sees Qormi take on Msida St. Joseph at 18.30 hrs, followed by Mosta v Melita that will determine the winners of the tournament. Mosta need only a draw to retain the tournament, while Melita have to win the finish on top of the four-team table.
