UEFA Women's Champions League: Heavy defeat for Birkirkara

women-champions-leagueChampions Birkirkara lost 6-0 to FC Twente in the opening match from Group 8 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying round at the FC Twente Stadion in Enschede on Thursday.

Shanice van de Sanden put the hosts ahead after just two minutes but the Stripes managed to control their opponents up to the hour when Twente scored three goals in eight minutes to go four goals ahead.

Captain Anouk Dekker doubled the score on 61 minutes, Maayke Heuver made it 3-0 on the 55th and Jill Roord scored the fourth goal on the 68th. Roord added another eight minutes from time before substitute Vera Beends sealed the issue with a sixth goal three minutes in added time.

Birkirkara face the strong Glasgow City on Saturday at the Sportpark Slangenbeek in Hengelo. The Scottish side defeated Osijek of Croatia 7-0 in another match on Thursday.
