Michael Mifsud signs one-year deal with Melbourne Heart

michael-mifsud-melbourneMelbourne Heart FC announced that they had strengthened their strike force for the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 season with the signing of Maltese captain Michael Mifsud on a one-season deal. Mifsud will wear the number 11 and is the 23rd player on the Club’s Roster.

Famous for scoring a double for Coventry City to knock Manchester United out of the Carling Cup, Michael Mifsud helped Malta to the first World Cup qualifying win in 20 years with a goal against Armenia last June.

The thirty-two year old striker started his career with Sliema Wanderers, before moving to play abroad for Kaiserslautern in Germany, Lillestrom in Norway, Coventry and Barnsley in England.

He had a short spell with Valletta between March and May 2010, leaving his mark with seven goals in seven league matches, helping them win the U*BET FA Trophy and the National League 100 Anniversary Cup. In February 2011, he joined Qormi but his signing was not enough to spare the Yellow Blacks from playing in the Relegation Pool. The following summer, he re-joined Valletta, signing a four-year deal. However after winning the Championship and two Super Cups, his contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

Melbourne Heart FC Head Coach John Aloisi said “Michael has scored goals at whatever level he has played at. He is an exciting footballer and will be a dynamic influence in our attack.”

“As the captain of Malta, he has played against the very best teams in the world and held his own. It’s not easy to lead the line against the likes of Italy and Croatia, and test those defences, something which he has done regularly.”

The Hyundai A-League 2013/14 for Melbourne Heart kicks-off on October 12 with the derby against Melbourne Victory.
