BOV Division 1: St. Andrews take sole leadership

bov-first-division-2013-2014St. Andrews moved on top the BOV First Division thanks to a dramtic 3-2 win over Lija Athletic in one of the four matches in programme on Sunday. A win which puts the Saints one point ahead of rivals Melita.

Andre Grabowski put Lija ahead on 23 minutes but Michael Grima levelled matters before half-time. Ige Abdullahi Adeshina made it 2-1 for Lija on 53 minutes. Joseph Farrugia restored equilibrium on 61 minutes and five minutes from time, Trayo Grozev notched the winner.

Zebbug Rangers claimed another three points thanks to a 3-1 win over Gudja United.

Anderson Mendes Ribeiro put Zebbug ahead on 29 minutes and four minutes in the second half, Mauricio Britto doubled the score. Ryan Dalli pulled one back for Gudja a minute later but Britto scored another goal for the Rangers on the 57th.

St. George’s registered their first win as they beat Zurrieq 2-1. Jhonatan Bernardo Mariano put the Saints ahead on the half-hour but nine minutes late, Matthew Schembri levelled matters. However twelve minutes in the second half, John Roland Emeka notched the winner for the Cospicua side.

In another match, Birzebbuga St. Peter’s defeated Gzira United 3-1. Martin Deyanov put the Saints ahead and early in the second half, Ronnie Celeste doubled the score. Simon Shead pulled one back for Gzira but Keith Muscat sealed the issue with a goal three minutes in added time.

St. Andrews lead the way with 10 points, followed by Melita on 9, Pietà 8, Zebbug 7, Lija and Birzebbuga 6, St. George’s, Gzira, Zejtun and Zurrieq 4, Gudja 3, Msida 1 and Hamrun -7.
