BOV Division 1: Zebbug retain top spot as Hotspurs suffer second defeat

bov-first-division-2013-2014Pietà Hotspurs suffered the second defeat in a week to miss the opportunity to regain the top spot in the BOV First Division. Zebbug Rangers therefore stay at the top with 26 points, two ahead of Pietà and four ahead of Lija.

Jurgen Pisani put the Hotspurs ahead on 32 minutes but Ryan Dalli levelled matters two minutes. Anthony Ewurum made it 2-1 for Gudja on 55 minutes.

Melita returned to winning ways as they beat Gzira United 3-2.

Jose Jairo Cueto Rodriguez put the Amateurs ahead on the 8th. Yanis Tonna levelled matters on 22 minutes but Luke Micallef restored the lead six minutes in the second half. Seven minutes from time, Gzira equalised through Joseph Jo Jo Ogunuppe. However four minutes later, Kurt Coleiro notched the winner.

Zejtun Corinthians defeated Msida St. Joseph 2-1.

Adrian Carabott put Zejtun ahead after just ten minutes but seventeen minutes in the second half, Ayrton Azzopardi equalised. Veteran Kenneth Abela gave Zejtun the three points with a goal four minutes from time.

In another match, St. George’s were held in a 1-1 draw by St. Andrews.

Therefore at the end of the first round, Zebbug lead the way with 26 points, followed by Pietà on 24, Lija 22, Melita 21, St. George’s 19, Gudja 18, Gzira 17, Birzebbuga 15, St. Andrews and Zejtun 13, Zurrieq 9, Msida 8 and Hamrun 2.
