UEFA Under-17 Championship: Portugal reach finals

UEFA-Under-17-Malta2014-logoPortugal are the fourth finalists in the UEFA Under-17 Championship 2014 after making sure of winning Group 7 thanks to a 3-0 win over Ukraine on Friday. Portugal join the Netherlands, Scotland and hosts Malta in the finals.

Portugal, who had defeated Latvia 3-0 in the first match, lead the way with six points, followed by Ukraine on 3, Iceland and Latvia 1. Ukraine, who had defeated Iceland 2-0 in the first match, would still end second even if they beat Latvia in their last match and hosts Portugal lose to Iceland as Portugal would have won the direct encounter. In another match on Friday, Latvia and Iceland shared the spoils in a goalless draw.

Meanwhile in Group 1, Spain beat Wales 1-0 while hosts Russia were held in a 1-1 draw by Switzerland. Spain and Switzerland lead the way with 4 points, followed by hosts and holders Russia on 2 and Wales 0. In the final match on Monday, Switzerland take on Spain while Russia face Wales. A winner in the clash between Switzerland and Spain would determine the winner but in case of a draw and a win for Russia over Wales, the three teams will end their commitments on level points.

In Group 2, England lead the way with six points after a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic and a 1-0 win over Albania. Hosts Czech Republic defeated Italy 2-1 who had beaten Albania 2-1 in their first game. England need a draw from the clash with Italy to secure a place in the finals while a win for Italy and a win for teh Czech Republic over Albania will see three teams end on top with six points.

In Group 5, Germany and hosts Serbia registered their second win and the direct clash will determine the winner. Germany beat Georgia 4-0 and Ireland 3-0 while Serbia beat Ireland 2-1 and Georgia 2-0. A draw would favour Germany due to the better goal difference.
