As part of the preparation ahead of the UEFA Women’s EURO preliminary round mini-tournament which will be played in April, the Malta women’s national team will be taking part in the first edition of the Aphrodite Cyprus Cup which will be held between the 10th and 18th March.
The tournament is being organised by the Cyprus FA in conjunction with UEFA as the European body strives to develop further women’s football.
Taking part in the tournament apart from hosts Cyprus are Greece, Malta, Latvia, Lebanon, the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar.
Teams are divided into two groups and give the tournament from four matches, three in the group stage and a classification match.
Malta was drawn in Group B together with Bahrain, Cyprus and Qatar. Malta, now under the guidance of new national coach Mark Gatt, plays Qatar on March 12, Cyprus on March 13 and Bahrain on March 15.
The tournament will end on March 18 with the classification matches as the winners of the two groups face each other in the final, the runner-ups will face each other in the final for thrid and fourth place, the third teams in the two groups will play for the fifth and sixth place and the bottom teams will play for the seventh and eight place.
In the UEFA Women’s EURO mini-tournament, Malta will be facing Georgia, Andorra and the Faroe Islands.
