Gzira United moved to just one point behind third-placed Fgura United as they returned to winning ways, beating neighbours Msida St. Joseph 6-1. For Msida, this was the ninth consecutive defeat.
Yanis Tonna put Gzira ahead on the 10th but Stacey Vella levelled matters six minutes later. Gzira regained the lead thanks to a penalty by Moises Avila Perez on the 35th and another penalty, this time by Ryan Dalli, eleven minutes in the second half put them 3-1 ahead. Yanis Tonna increased the lead on 77 minutes with John Nwoba scored a fifth goal on the 87th and Matteo Caribotti and sixth one minute from time.
In another match, Vittoriosa Stars beat Birzebbuga St. Peter’s 4-1. This defeat condemns Birzebbuga to playing in Division 2 next season.
Liam Gauci opened the score for Vittoriosa on the 10th and Felipe Canavan doubled the score on 33 minutes. Canavan added another on the 56th with Michael Camilleri making it 4-0 on the 71st. Eleven minutes from time, Edson Luiz Bonati scored a consolation goal for Birzebbuga.
Pembroke and St. Andrews lead the way with 46 points, followed by Fgura on 40, Gzira 39, Gudja, Vittoriosa and Melita 38, St. George’s 34, Lija 32, Mqabba 30, Rabat 22, Zurrieq 19, Msida 14 and Birzebbuga 12.
