Hamrun Spartans present new signings

After winning promotion from the BOV Second Division last season as runners-up, Hamrun Spartans will be aiming for a second consecutive promotion as the First Division campaign kicks-off this weekend.

The club strengthened their squad with a number of new players in their bid to win promotion to the Premier League. Hamrun secured the services of goalkeepers David Cassar and Fredrick Tabone, defenders Mark Anthony Borg, Philip Chircop and Martin Hrubsa, midfielders Mathias Muchardi and Orosco Anonam and strikers Trevor Cilia and Haruna Zambuk Garba. Orosco Anonam will also serve as assistant coach to Steve D’Amato and coach of the Under-19 team.

The club retained Nigerian striker Saturday Nanapere who was also offered a three-year contract while club products Glenn Azzopardi, Luke Grech, Jake Grech and Agatino Sicali all signed new deals with the club.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Hamrun Spartans coach Steve D’Amato said that last season, the club had started a new project meant to put the club back where it belongs. He said Hamrun reached their fist objective last season – that of winning promotion and this season, the club has a similar objective – securing promotion to the Premier League.

Hamrun started their pre-season training in mid-July and Steve D’Amato is satisfied with the players’ hard work so far.

D’Amato thanked the rest of the technical staff, namely his assistants Orosco Anonam and Jason Mangani, goalkeepers coach Mark Tabone and team manager Kenneth Cefai.

Club administrator Joe Bugeja said that so far everything was going according to plans. He said that while strengthening the squad, the club still cares about its products and no less than ten club products form part of the senior squad. Bugeja stressed that with discipline and by working diligently, the club could achieve its objectives.

Vice-president Gaetano Debattista stressed that the committee worked hard to strengthen the squad so that the club is among the challengers for promotion.

Hamrun Spartans will be wearing kits by Sportika while the club’s main sponsors area The Wholesaler and Powerade.
