Champions and Women’s Knock-Out holders Hibernians defeated rivals Birkirkara 3-1 after extra-time to secure a place in the semi-finals of the competition where they will be facing BOV Women’s Second Division leaders Gozo FC.
Alishia Sultana put the Stripes ahead after just one minute but Dionne Tonna was quick to equalise two minutes later. No other goals were scored and therefore with the score still draw at the end of the ninety minutes, the game went into extra-time. Ylenia Carabott made it 2-1 six minutes in the first half of extra-time and Shona Zammit sealed the issue with a third goal one minute in the second half of extra-time.
Gozo defeated Sliema Wanderers 6-2 in another quarter-final.
The other two semi-finalists are Mgarr United and Raiders (Luxol). Mgarr defeated Pembroke Athleta 6-0 while Raiders (Luxol) beat Kirkop United 4-0.
The women’s national team will now travel to Cyprus to take part in the Aphrodite Cup. Malta faces Israel on March 10, Lithuania on March 11, Estonia on March 13 and hosts Cyprus on March 15.
