Birkirkara close in on Balzan

Birkirkara scored two early goals and then waited till late to add another two goals to beat Naxxar Lions 4-0 and register a third consecutive win which puts them just one point behind third-placed Balzan.

For Naxxar, this was the sixth consecutive defeat. Six games in which they conceded thirty-one goals and scored none.

Mauricio Mazzetti returned for Birkirkara after recovering from an injury. Naxxar, on the other hand, welcomed back Andrew Scicluna but lacked suspended goalkeeper Luke Pecorella.

The Stripes took the lead on the 7th minute when off a cross from the right, Matija Smrekar rose high to head home past goalkeeper Alberto Gallinetta.

Birkirkara doubled the score when off a Mujanovic freekick from the left, Mazzetti headed the ball down for Ryan Camenzuli to hit home from close range.

On the hour, direct from a corner, Daren Falzon saw goalkeeper Kopric block his attempt on the goal line with the ball hitting the woodwork before ending into another corner.

Substitute Edmond Agius made it 3-0 eleven minutes from time when he beat Gallinetta with an angled shot from the right following an intelligent pass by Ryan Camenzuli from the edge of the area.

Birkirkara added a fourth goal on the 90th minute thanks to Edison Bilbao Zarate who received a cross from the right, controlled the ball and hit low past goalkeeper Alberto Gallinetta.
