BOV Division 2: Gharghur beaten, Sirens held in a draw

Following Marsa’s defeat to Siggiewi on Friday, Gharghur and Sirens dropped important points in the BOV Second Division on Sunday.

Leaders Gharghur needed a win to secure promotion but goals by Kenneth Aquilina on the 24th and Lazar Doric on the 36th gave Mgarr United a 2-0 win over the leaders at the Charles Abela Stadium.

Sirens only managed to rescue a point from the clash with neighbours Mellieha at the Sirens Stadium. A draw which puts them in joint-second place with Marsa. Kalil da Rosa put Mellieha ahead just before half-time but three minutes from time, Lee Joe Schembri levelled matters.

Zejtun Corinthians sored two in each half as they defeated Zurrieq 4-0 at the Charles Abela Stadium. They opened the score thanks to Ryan Cauchi on the 20th. Mauro Brincat doubled the score thanks to a penalty on the 32nd. Ryan Cauchi added another on the 56th before Margeith Scicluna made it 4-0 on the 73rd.

A goal by Dillon Pace two minutes in added time gave Zabbar St. Patrick a dramatic win over Kirkop United at the Luxol Stadium.

In another match at the Luxol Stadium, Qrendi defeated Swieqi United 3-1. Clayton Caruana put Qrendi ahead on the 7th minute and Dasser Sammut doubled the lead on the 20th. Matthew Asciak pulled one back on the 53rd but deep into stoppage time, Dasser Sammut sealed the issue with a third goal for Qrendi.

Birzebbuga St. Peter’s defeated Msida St. Joseph 5-1 in another match at the Sirens Stadium. Ryo Kodama gave Birzebbuga the lead on the 37th and two goals by Keith Muscat on the 47th and 52nd increased the lead to 3-0. Andrew Formosa pulled one back for Msida on the 78th but another goal by Keith Muscat on the 84th and Shawn Darmanin on the 87th gave Birzebbuga a more comfortable win.

Gharghur lead the way with 50 points, followed by Marsa and Sirens on 48, Zabbar 42, Siggiewi 38, Mgarr 36, Zejtun 34, Birzebbuga 33, Qrendi 31, Mellieha 27, Swieqi and Kirkop 19, Zurrieq 13 and Msida 5.
