Gzira United continued to strengthen their squad ahead of the forthcoming BOV Premier League campaign with the signing of former Mali international Souleymane Diamoutene.
Thirty-three year old Diamoutene was on the books of Italian Serie B side Pescara last season. He has been playing in Italy for the past fifteen years, apart from a short spell with Levski Sofia in Bulgaria in 2012. He joined the Udinese youth sector at an early age but signed his first contract with Lucchese in summer 2001. He was loaned to Perugia but in 2004, he was transferred to Lecce – the club with whom he made his Serie A debut. In the January 2009 transfer window, he was loaned to Roma and later had other spells on loan with Bari and Pescara. After his experience in Bulgaria, he played for Lupa Roma, Fidelis Andria and finally Pescara.
Diamoutene played forty-eight matches for the Mali national team.
Meanwhile Nigerian striker John Nwoba joined the club on a one-year deal. The twenty-seven year old starts his second spell with the Maroons after playing for the club in season 2014/15. He had also played with Sliema Wanderers, St. George’s, Gharghur, Mqabba, Hibernians and Zebbug Rangers.
