Wanderers return to winning ways

Sliema Wanderers bounced back from the 0-2 defeat to Gzira United as they defeated St. Andrews 2-0 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Saturday.

This was the third win in four matches for the Wanderers while for St. Andrews, this was the third consecutive defeat.

The Saints lacked the suspended Amoy Brown while Joseph Farrugia started the game on the bench. They were replaced by Kevyn Mcfarlane and Matthew Woo Ling.

Sliema coach John Buttigieg could not count on the suspended Ryan Fenech, John Mintoff and Edmond Agius started on the bench. Claudio Pani was making his debut for the Wanderers after joining the club from Valletta this summer. Peter Xuereb, Michele Sansone and Jean Paul Farrugia were all named in the starting line-up.

The Saints went close to taking the lead on the 34th minute thanks to a Matthew Woo Ling free kick who just missed the target and two minutes later, Martin Davis hit upright with an angled shot from the left.

However three minutes in added time, the Wanderers managed to break the deadlock thanks to a fine curling shot by Jean Paul Farrugia from outside the area which gave goalkeeper Matthew Calleja Cremona no chance.

Three minutes in the second half, Sliema doubled the score thanks to a powerful rising shot by Jefferson de Assis which ended in the top right corner.
