Darren Abdilla tendered his resignation from his post of coach of Gzira United. Although this was rejected by the club, Abdilla insisted on his resignation for the best interest of the club.
Abdilla had joined Gzira United mid-way through season 2014/15, leading the club to third place and the Play-Off spot. The following season, he led the Maroons to promotion to the Premier League after an absence of thirty-four years and the following summer, he signed a new deal as part of the club’s technical staff. However he was re-appointed as coach a few months later.
After securing their Premier League status in season 2016/17, they finished third last season to secure a place in the UEFA Europa League where they eliminated UE Sant Julia of Andorra.
The Maroons are currently third on 34 points, six points behind joint-leaders Valletta and Hibernians.
