BOV Division 1: Santa Lucia take Premier League play-off spot

Santa Lucia will be facing St. Andrews in the BOV Premier League Play-Off on May 5 after they claimed third place in the BOV First Division after defeating Lija Athletic in one of the final five matches in programme on Sunday.

Santa Lucia defeated Lija 6-2 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Jurgen Suda put Santa Lucia ahead on the 8th minute and five minutes later, Patrick Jean Texeira Maia doubled the score. Luis Diego Mosquera Segura scored twice on the 16th and 35th to extend the lead to 4-0 by the end of the first half. Ten minutes in the second half, Texeira Maia increased the lead further but Erjon Beu reduced the gap on the 65th. Kevin Duvan Ante Rosero made it 6-2 before Erjon Beu converted a penalty for Lija.

Naxxar Lions, on the other hand, had to settle for fourth place despite a 5-0 win over Marsa at the Centenary Stadium, courtesy of Joel Ellul on the 19th, Saturday Nanapere on the 50th, Caydon Bugeja on the 84th, Ayrton Senna Azzopardi on the 85th and Benjamin Essel on the 88th.

Runners-up Gudja United defeated Mqabba 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium. Raphael Kooh Sohna put Gudja ahead on the 40th and although Alexsandro Ferreira converted a penalty on the 70th, Jurgen Farrugia handed Gudja the three points with a goal ten minutes from time.

Meanwhile Vittoriosa Stars will take part in the BOV First Division Play-Off against Mgarr United on May 5 after finishing third from bottom.

Vittoriosa Stars were held in a 2-2 draw by San Gwann at the Centenary Stadium. Liam Gauci put Vittoriosa ahead on the 39th but Renan Oliveira equalised on the 46th and five minutes later, Christian Stewart made it 2-1 for San Gwann. Noah Olawole Ojuola levelled matters for San Gwann on the 72nd minute.

On the other hand, Qrendi came from behind to beat Zejtun Corinthians 2-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Dragoljub Andjelkovic put Zejtun ahead on the 24th minute but a Ciro Quaranta penalty levelled matters on the 84th and four minutes later, Jonathan Silveira da Silva made it 2-1.

Sirens end their commitments on 59 points, followed by Gudja on 52 points, Santa Lucia 48, Naxxar 45, Pembroke 40, Zebbug 37, Lija 35, Swieqi 34, Mqabba, Zejtun and Qrendi 32, Vittoriosa 29, San Gwann 23 and Marsa 5.
