Ghajnsielem, Xewkija through to FA Trophy first round

Ghajnsielem and Xewkija Tigers were the last two teams to secure a place in the first round of the FA Trophy as they defeated SK Victoria Wanderers and St. Laurence Spurs respectively in another two matches from the Preliminary Round at the Gozo Stadium on Monday.

In the first match, Ghajnsielem prevailed on SK Victoria Wanderers after extra-time, beating them 3-2.

Igor Misan put the Wanderers two goals ahead within the first thirteen minutes with goals on the 5th and the 13th. Michael Bezzina reduced the gap on the 24th and an Igor Nedeljkovic penalty levelled matters on the 35th. The game went into extra-time with Jhon Arboleda Valencia notching the winner.

In the next round, Ghajnsielem will be facing Xaghra United.

In the other match, Xewkija Tigers found no difficulty in beating St. Laurence Spurs 5-0 to set up a clash with Gharb Rangers this weekend.

Jackson de Lima opened the score on the 6th minute and a brace by Rodney Buttigieg on the 14th and the 40th extended the lead before Claudio Daniel Frances made it 4-0 just before half-time. On the hour, Buttigieg completed his hat-trick for Xewkija’s fifth goal.
