Sirens, Sliema ends in a goalless draw

Sirens and Sliema Wanderers earned a point each as they shared the spoils in a goalless draw at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.

For Sirens, this was the first point following the heavy defeat to Hamrun Spartans while the Wanderers drop their first points after winning their first game.

The Wanderers had one change from the team which defeated Hibernians as Alex Satariano replaced Riki Kakinuma.

Sirens, on the other hand, lacked the suspended Ryan Scicluna but coach Steve D’Amato made further changes leaving Manuel Angel Bustos, Jacob Walker and Adrian Borg out of the starting line-up, including Jonathan Pearson, Ryan Grech, Samba Tounkara and Romeu Romao. Tounkara was therefore making his league debut for the St. Paul’s Bay side.

Juri Cisotti went close for Sliema after just 8 minutes and then five minutes from the end of the first half, the Wanderers were unlucky not to take the lead when Myles Beerman’s powerful drive hit the upright.

Six minutes in the second half, Sirens went close thanks to Wellington de Oliveira, served on the right by Maxuell Samurai and a minute later, Gabriel Aquilina hit just wide from outside the area.

Jake Galea performed a good save on a Thiago Espindola de Paulo freekick for Sirens on 59 minutes. Two minutes later, Thiago Espindola received a second yellow card and was therefore sent off.

A Danny Holla freekick for Sliema was parried by David Cassar on the 63rd minute.

On the 68th minute, Sliema defender Oscar Linton also was given marching orders by referee Emanuel Grech as he received a second yellow card.

Two minutes from time, Juri Cisotti went close once again for Sliema, this time with an overhead kick following a cross from the left by Myles Beerman and in added time, a Sebastian Grech volley just missed the target.
