Dramatic stoppage-time winner hands Valletta 2-1 win over Zejtun

After failing to win in five matches, Valletta returned to winning ways as a goal in added time handed them a 2-1 win over Zejtun Corinthians at the Centenary Stadium on Monday.

A win which puts them on level points with Birkirkara in seventh place but the Stripes have a game in hand.

Zejtun, on the other hand, remain joint-fourth from bottom on 12 points. They could consider themselves unlucky to leave Ta’ Qali empty-handed.

Following a goalless first half, Valletta took the lead on the 56th minute when Lucas Moreira failed to control the ball just outside the area and Mario Fontanella stole the ball off the Zejtun defender and beat goalkeeper Christian Cassar with a shot from the left.

Four minutes later, Zejtun equalised when Kemar Reid served Thiago Bonfim whose cross found Vitor Vieira at the right place at the right time to head home past Cini.

Four minutes in added time, Valletta notched the winner when substitute Rowen Muscat, served by Leandro Aguirre, beat the Zejtun goalkeeper with a shot from the edge of the area.

VALLETTA Yenz Cini, Ryan Camilleri (Miguel Angel Alba 37), Triston Caruana, Santiago Malano, Ryan Fenech (Isaiah Micallef 65), Joseph Zerafa, Eslit Sala, Ivan Requena (Rowen Muscat 46), Leandro Aguirre, Mario Fontanella, Taisei Marukawa (Shaun Dimech 10).

  1. Dramatic stoppage-time???? What about the two goals denied to Zejtun Corinthians which were perfectly valid!!??? But of course, I am talking about a newly promoted team which had the potential to win against a team like Valletta!!!
