Leaders Hibernians were held in a 1-1 draw by rivals Valletta in this weekend’s big match from the BOV Premier League at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday.
This draw puts the Paolites on the 17-point mark leaving the possibility of Birkirkara joining them on top should they beat Sirens. Valletta, on the other hand, join Floriana in third place on ten.
The Paolites went close to taking the lead early in the game thanks to an angled shot by Sergio Raphael dos Anjos from the right which hit the upright. Ibrahim Kone performed a good save at point blank on Mario Fontanella but Hibs replied with an angled shot by Wilfried Domoraud from the left scraped past the post.
Hibs took the lead on the 36th minute when Jake Grech tried to exchange the ball with Jurgen Degabriele and despite deflections by Ryan Camilleri and Triston Caruana, Grech regained possession and hit home past Alessandro Guarnone.
However ten minutes from time, Valletta notched the equaliser when Ivan Curjuric sent substitute Shaun Dimech through on the left and the latter beat Ibrahim Kone with an angled shot.
