Tipsport Malta Cup 2022 welcomes top-division clubs from four European countries

The fourth edition of the Tipsport Malta Cup international football tournament will take place from 16 to 25 January, 2022 at the National Stadium. Four teams, namely Czech Premier League side SK Sigma Olomouc, Slovakia’s FC Spartak Trnava, Austria’s WSG Tirol Wattens, winners of the 2021 Tipsport Malta Cup, and Danish AAB Aalborg FC, will be heading to Malta to play in the tournament and conduct a training camp.

For the first time, the annual tournament will be contested by teams from the top championship in their respective countries. Another novelty is the tournament format as the organisers listened to the wishes of the participants and extended the duration of the winter camp so that the teams could play three tournament matches in addition to training. “This was not possible in previous years due to the fact that the participating Czech teams were not willing to play against each other during the tournament and preferred foreign opponents,” Václav Sochor, the Head of Communication of organisers Tipsport, said at the launch of the 2022 Tipsport Malta Cup held earlier this week in Prague.

Exemplary co-operation and trust

The Tipsport Malta Cup enjoys the generous support of the Maltese partners with the tournament highlighting Malta’s allure as an attractive destination for the preparation of sports teams, especially football. “Malta lives football. Although we are about the size of a medium-sized European city, we have over 50 clubs playing in different league categories in our country,” said Carlo Micallef, Head of Marketing at the Malta Tourism Authority. “The tournament has really moved to the international level, and top clubs from other European countries have started to take notice.”

Lubomír Ježek, Head of Media and Trade at Tipsport, said: “The tournament is organised and funded mostly by Tipsport, but we can only do so thanks to the great support and assistance we receive from Malta. The Malta Tourism Authority and the MFA SportsPlus agency are great and reliable partners whose help is essential for us to develop the Tipsport Malta Cup.”

Pan-European level

The Tipsport Malta Cup attracts great media coverage, especially from the sports media. In addition to the Czech and Slovak media, a number of journalists from Austria and Denmark will be covering the upcoming tournament.

The 2022 edition will take place in accordance with the strict Covid-19 measures applicable in Malta. Malta is one of the countries with the lowest Covid-19 incidence worldwide.
