BOV National Amateur League: Zabbar close in on Marsaskala following comfortable derby win

Leaders Zurrieq stay six points clear in Group B of the BOV National Amateur League as Zabbar St. Patrick defeated neighbours Marsaskala 4-0 in the derby at the Sirens Stadium on Sunday.

Kenneth Aquilina put the Saints ahead on the 3rd minute. Miguel Ciantar doubled the score on the 20th and David Oliveira Souza made it 3-0 five minutes from the end of the first half. Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza sealed the issue with a goal on the 65th.

Mtarfa bounced back from last week’s heavy defeat to Zurrieq as they beat Qormi 4-0 at the Luxol Stadium.

Matthew Camilleri put Mtarfa ahead on the 6th and four minutes from the end of the first half, Daniel Cremona doubled the score. Alejandro Brincat made it 3-0 on the 63rd and five minutes later, Kurt Zammit scored a fourth goal.

Zurrieq lead the way with 32 points, followed by Marsaskala on 26, Mtarfa and Zabbar on 25, Mdina 15, Kirkop 11, Mellieha 10, Qormi 9, Sta. Venera 8.

Meanwhile in Group A, leaders Attard were held in a goalless draw by Gharghur in a top-of-the-table clash at the Sirens Stadium.

In another match, Birzebbuga St. Peter’s defeated Ghaxaq 4-1 at the Luxol Stadium. Aaron Agius scored twice on the 17th and 32nd to hand Birzebbuga a two-goal lead. Jean Luke Polidano reduced the gap on the 72nd but Birzebbuga regained a two-goal lead thanks to Alan Tabone on the 75th with Josef Dalli adding another on the 89th.

Attard lead the way with 29 points, followed by Gharghur on 27, Kalkara 23, Msida 22, Birzebbuga 20, Xghajra 18, Ghaxaq and Dingli 11, Siggiewi and Ta’ Xbiex 10. Attard had nine points deducted.
