BOV Challenge League: Pembroke Athleta hit six past St. George’s to secure promotion

Pembroke Athleta secured promotion to the BOV Premier League as a comfortable 6-0 win over St. George’s at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Saturday put Jacques Scerri’s seven points clear in Group A of the BOV Challenge League.

Jurgen Suda put Pembroke ahead after just one minute and Weverton Gomes doubled the score on the 10th. Stefan Jankovic made it 3-0 on the 20th and Suda added another on the 34th. In the second half, Pembroke scored another two goals thanks to Samuel Buhagiar on the 55th and James Brincat on the 70th.

At the Centenary Stadium, Melita defeated Vittoriosa Stars 3-0 thanks to goals by Noel Francis Omondi on the 19th, Hiroya Konno on the 53rd and Matthew Debattista on the 76th.

Pembroke lead the way with 41 points, followed by Naxxar and Zejtun on 34, Melita 30, Marsaxlokk 29, Lija 24, San Gwann 23, Mqabba 17, Rabat and Vittoriosa 13 and St. George’s 4.

In Group B, Tarxien moved two points behind leaders Zebbug as they defeated Qrendi 2-0 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium thanks to goals by Daren Falzon on the 3rd minute and Thiago Nonato Peixoto on the 35th.

In another match, goals by Kei Sano on the 20th and Alexander Nilsson on the 72nd enabled St. Andrews to secure their Challenge League status as they defeated Luqa St. Andrew’s 2-0 at the Centenary Stadium. Luqa, on the other hand, were relegated to the National Amateur League.

Zebbug lead the way with 36 points followed by Tarxien on 34, Pieta’ 33, Marsa 29, Fgura and St. Andrews 25, Qrendi and Swieqi 20, Senglea 12, Mgarr 11 and Luqa 10.
