Under-21 side beaten 1-3 by Lithuania

The Malta Under-21 national team lost 1-3 to Lithuania in another match from Group C of the UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifiers at the Centenary Stadium on Tuesday.

A match from which something more was expected from the locals, considering that the only three points Lithuania had obtained in the group before were the ones in the 2-1 win over Malta in October. This win now puts Lithuania on level points with Malta and Northern Ireland.

Following a goalless first half during which Malta went close with attempts by Mbong and Attard, the visitors took the lead on the 64th minute courtesy of an own goal by Christian Gauci off a cross by Gvidas Gineitis.

Substitute Joseph Zammit levelled matters on the 79th minute, beating the Lithuanian goalkeeper in style following an assist by Andreas Vella.

However Lithuania were quick to regain the lead two minutes later through substitute Deividas Dovydaitis whose low shot beat goalkeeper Cain Formosa.

Another substitute Faustas Steponavicius sealed the issue with a third goal three minutes in added time placing the ball at the back off the net when served by Dovydaitis.
