Newly-promoted Marsaxlokk have started to strengthen their squad ahead of the coming season with the signing of three players – Leandro Aguirre, Conor Borg and Ryan Tonna.
Thirty three year old left back Leandro Aguirre had started his career with Boca Juniors and had spells with Nacional in Uruguay, CA Aldosivi and Independiente Rivadavia in Argentina before joining Valletta in summer 2016. He left the following season to join Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza in Argentina. However he returned with the Citizens in summer 2020 to spend another season with the club. Last year, he played for Birkirkara.
A product of Floriana, twenty-five year old Conor Borg made his Premier League debut in season 2014/15. Earlier in 2014, he had a short spell with Chievo Verona. In summer 2015, he was transferred to AS Roma but spent the season on loan with the Greens. He moved to Italy the following season where he was a member of the Primavera squad. Borg moved back to Malta in 2018, joining Hamrun Spartans. Last summer, he agreed to join Sirens but was allowed to move to Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE. However after the UAE club’s plans folded, he returned with the St. Paul’s Bay side.
Twenty-one year old Ryan Tonna joins the club on a three-year deal from Valletta. A former Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 international, Tonna had started his career at Birkirkara but then joined Valletta with whom he also managed to make his Premier League debut. He joined Marsaxlokk on loan last summer.
Meanwhile Pablo Doffo and Ivo Rivera have been confirmed as first team coach and goalkeepers’ coach while Juan Cruz Gill, who played for the club during the past season has been appointed as assistant coach after retiring from played football. Former Floriana team manager and official Peter Agius has been appointed as the new team manager.
