Embracing the objective of the European Week of Sport to give people around Europe and across the world a springboard into being active, the Youth Football Association is pleased to be actively contributing to this year’s campaign, being co- ordinated by SportMalta.
With the European Week of Sport initiatives culminating in the main national event this Sunday, 25th September at the Marsa Sports Grounds, around 200 children from 15 youth nurseries will be taking part in an Under-10 Fun Football Festival.
“The European Week of Sport aims to address the inactivity problem by encouraging Europeans to lead a healthy and active lifestyle,” Stephanie Rocco, the General Secretary of the Youth FA said.
“Sports and physical activity are very important for the wellbeing of the people the world over and the popularity of football makes it a powerful vehicle for children and youths to get into sport and exercise regularly. These values are also at the heart of the mission of the Youth Football Association as we strive to promote football and a healthy lifestyle at grassroots and youth level.”
“We are very pleased to be working together with SportMalta and other sports partners to organise this fun football festival which will see the active participation of around 200 children during the main event at the 2022 European Week of Sport in Malta.”
The 16 teams have been divided into four groups with the matches being played in accordance with the standards and guidelines set by the Malta FA Technical Centre for this age-group. Every group has been assigned a colour with the first fixtures at the Marsa Sports Grounds on Sunday kicking off at 10.00hrs. Ħamrun Spartans, Lija/Iklin, Valletta (1) and Żebbuġ Rangers are in the first group (green), while Floriana, Hibernians, Mġarr United and Żabbar St Patrick are in the yellow group with matches starting at 11.15hrs.
The teams in the orange group – Attard, Marsaxlokk, Pietà Hotspurs and San Ġwann – enter the fray at 14.00hrs and those in the blue group – Mqabba, Qormi, Valletta (2) and Żurrieq – kick off their match schedule at 15.00hrs.
The programme of events for the European Week of Sport in Malta features different sports, including waterpolo, judo, netball, squash, sailing, tennis, table tennis and weightlifting, fitness classes as well as Special Olympics activities, building on the success of the Invitational Games held in Malta last May.
