A goal by Ailton Jorge dos Santos Soares handed Hamrun Spartans a sixth win in as many matches at they defeated Valletta 1-0 at the National Stadium on Saturday.
A win which ensures the Spartans stay at the top of the table as they await the result of the clash between Gudja and Birkirkara later on Saturday. Valletta, on the other hand, suffer a third successive defeat following back-to-back defeats to Floriana and Birkirkara.
The Citizens had three changes from the team which lost to Birkirkara as Triston Caruana, Christian Gauci and Ulrich N’Nomo were preferred to Shaun Dimech, Andrea Zammit and Flavio Cheveresan.
Hamrun scored the all-important goal on 21 minutes when Juan Carlos Corbalan released Jonny on the right and off the latter’s cross, Dodo slotted the ball past goalkeeper Alessandro Guarnone.
