Birkirkara women’s team have opened a three-point lead at the top of the Assikura Women’s League after securing a comfortable 9-0 win over San Ġwann.
The Stripes played the second half against San Ġwann as they resumed the November encounter which was halted due to adverse weather.
Jose Borg’s were already leading by four goals when the game was abandoned last year.
In Monday’s encounter, they added five more goals through a Veronique Mifsud’s hat-trick who is now the club’s top scorer with six together, Alishia Sultana and Raina Giusti.
San Ġwann continue to lure at the bottom of the standings without a single point after nine games.
Swieqi United defeated Mtarfa 5-0 to lift themselves into second place, trailing leaders Birkirkara by three points.
Brazilian forward Fernanda Peinado opened the score for the Owls after 27 minutes before Mariah Sciberras and Jasmine Vella Turner extended the lead to 3-0 before the break.
After the change of ends, captain Dorianne Theuma and Sciberras added two more goals for Judith Kuipers’s side.
Mtarfa remain second bottom with three points having played nine games as well.
In the highlight game of the week, Hibernians and Mġarr United cancelled each other out in a thrilling 1-1 draw.
Mġarr forged ahead through Rebecca D’Agostino after five minutes but Hibernians staged up a solid reaction in search of a leveller.
They managed to equalise through captain Martina Borg midway into the second half to keep a two-point distance from the Greens.

Elsewhere, Lexine Farrugia scored a brace as she now leads the Assikura Women’s League scoring charts with nine goals.
The former Birkirkara player propelled Raiders Lija to an 8-0 win over San Ġwann, who played on Wednesday as well in their Matchday 10 fixture.
Youngster Francesca Bartolo grabbed a brace herself while the other goals came through Sarah Caruana, Leah Ayres, Leanne Micallef and Ylenia Grech.
