Hamrun Spartans crowned champions as Montebello strike hands them narrow win over Gzira

Hamrun Spartans were crowned champions for the second time in three years and for the ninth time in the history of the club as a goal by Luke Montebello handed them a narrow win over Gzira United at the National Stadium on Saturday.

With fourteen points separating the two teams before the game, a draw would have been enough for Hamrun but Branko Nisevic’s side went a step further to claim the three points and possibly jeopardise the Maroons’ second place in the table.

Shots at goal were few and far in between throughout the ninety minutes as they game seemed heading for a goalless draw but nine minutes from time, substitute Luke Montebello received an assist by Elvis Mashike from the right and slotted the ball home past goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov.
