Balzan beat Birkirkara to move joint-fourth

Balzan ended their commitments on level points with Hibernians and Mosta in fourth place as they defeated Birkirkara 2-1 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Friday.

In case, either Birkirkara and Gzira United win the Izibet FA Trophy, a decider for fourth place would be necessary to determine which other team would qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League and since Balzan, Hibernians and Mosta ended as joint-fourth, the direct encounters would be taken into account; Mosta would be eliminated due to an inferior record and a decider between Balzan and Hibernians would determine the team to qualify for European football.

Balzan took the lead on the 15th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Matheus Souza was floored by goalkeeper Giacomo Nava and from the penalty spot, Aleksa Andrejic converted.

Birkirkara equalised six minutes from the end of the first half when off a Matteo Fedele corner from the right, Enzo Daniel Cabrera headed the ball home in style.

However, Balzan regained the lead two minutes in the second half courtesy of a Matheus Souza effort from inside the area after a freekick by Chanel Ndinga was deflected by a defender.
