Birkirkara host FK Breznica of Montenegro in the semi-final of Group 11 of Round 1 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League 2023/24 at the Centenary Stadium on Wednesday, kick-off at 18:00.
The winner will then face Swiss champions FC Zurich in the final on Saturday while the loser would have to settle for third place.
Birkirkara won the championship eleven times, including the last six campaigns. This time they hope to go one step further than last year when they managed to secure third place in Round 1 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League after defeating Glentoran of Northern Ireland 2-1.
However, this will be no easy task. Founded in 2013, FK Breznica finished twice as runners-up, winning the last eight titles in Montenegro.
This summer, the Stripes, led by coach Jose Borg, strengthened their squad with the arrival of Francesca Chircop and three new foreigners, Edith Garcia Falero, Arianna De Moral and Caitlin Elizabeth Rodgers.
