Second-half blitz sees Hibernians beat Swieqi United in Assikura Women’s League

Hibernians extended their unbeaten start after staging a commanding display to defeat Swieqi United in the big match of the week.

After a pulsating first 45 minutes ended in a goalless stalemate, two Hibernians goals inside the opening nine minutes saw them take a two-goal lead.

Former Swieqi United player Alexis Espitia beat Chanelle Borg from close-range before captain Martina Borg doubled the lead with a strike from the outside the area.

The Owls pulled one back through Ghana forward Salamatu Abdulai as they piled up the pressure on the Paolites in search for an equaliser.

However, veteran goalkeeper Sharon Costantino – who returned in goal this weekend – pulled a few impressive saves while the rest of the Hibernians’ team stood their ground to keep Swieqi at bay and clinch three precious points.

Birkirkara broke little sweat to beat San Ġwann and secure their second win of the season.

Returning from their European commitments, the Stripes opened a comfortable five-goal lead in the first half before sealing the win with three more goals.

American midfielder Arianna Del Moral scored a hat-trick for the Stripes while Edith Garcia, scorer of the winning goal against Breznica in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, was on the scoresheet as well.

Mġarr United hit Mtarfa for eight on Thursday.

The Greens made sure of the victory in the first half after opening a six-goal lead.

Joelma was Mġarr’s hero with four goals, two in each half as she now leads the league’s scoring charts with six goals.

Brazilian forward Fernanda Peinado scored twice to make it five goals in three games for the Greens.

The other goals were scored by Luana Cabral and Anastasia Sivolobova, her first goal for the Greens since joining in the summer.

Valletta recorded their second win of the season after beating Lija Athletic at the Victor Tedesco.

The Lilywhites cancelled a one-goal deficit after Lija had forged ahead through Leanne Micallef.

Anna Aloisio, twice, and Ylenia Grech scored Valletta’s goals to seal the comeback win.
