IZIBET Amateur League: Birzebbuga, Pembroke join Qrendi in second place

Birzebbuga St. Peter’s and Pembroke Athleta joined Qrendi in second place in Group A of the IZIBET Amateur League, one point behind leaders Rabat Ajax as two matches were played at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.

Pembroke Athleta defeated Kalkara United 5-1. Jordan Vella put Pembroke ahead on the 20th and Mouied Algazali doubled the score on the 31st. Seven minutes in the second half, Vella increased the lead and although Kalkara pulled one gap thanks to an own goal four minutes later, goals by Maverick Cassar on the 83rd and Weverton Gomes two minutes later sealed the issue for Jeffrey Mifsud’s side.

On the other hand, Siggiewi earned their first point after holding Birzebbuga St. Peter’s in a 1-1 draw. Lee Joe Schembri put Birzebbuga ahead five minutes from the end of the first time but in the dying minutes, one minute in added time, Deison Arvey Cuero notched the equaliser for Siggiewi.

Rabat lead the way on 13 points, followed by Birzebbuga, Pembroke and Qrendi on 12, Mtarfa 10, Mqabba 9, Mellieha 7, Sta. Venera 6, Xghajra and Kalkara 4, Mdina and Siggiewi 1.

Meanwhile in Group B, Vittoriosa Stars returned to winning ways as they defeated San Gwann 4-2, therefore handing the leaders their first defeat.

Aidan Agius Gilford put the Stars ahead on the 13th and Joseph Jojo Ogunnupe doubled the score on the 31st before Ali Shaban Chikh made it 3-0 five minutes from the end of the first half. Nezar Fawzi Abouhaisa reduced the gap on the 71st but Gabriel Calleja extended the lead on the 78th. Abouhaisa scored another goal for San Gwann six minutes in added time.
