Troubled Birkirkara face Hamrun Spartans

After losing three out of the last four matches, Birkirkara face a most difficult task as they take on Hamrun Spartans in one of the three matches in programme at the National Stadium and the Centenary Stadium on Saturday.

At the Centenary Stadium, kick-off at 14:00, Santa Lucia face Mosta.

Alessandro Zinnari’s side is still chasing the first win but earned a third point in a 1-1 draw with Valletta last week to move second from bottom. On the other hand, Mosta share the eighth place with Valletta, Birkirkara and Balzan on 10 points, following a 0-3 defeat to Gzira United. A defeat which brought to an end a good run for Joseph Grech’s side which saw them beat Birkirkara and Marsaxlokk and hold Valletta and Hamrun in draws.

At the National Stadium, kick-off at 14:00, Birkirkara and Hamrun Spartans cross swords in the first of two clashes in seven days. In fact, the two teams will be facing each other once again on Friday in the BOV Super Cup.

Hamrun lead the way in the BOV Premier League along with Floriana, seven points clear of the three teams in third place. They are unbeaten in eight matches, dropping their only points in draws with Sliema Wanderers and Mosta. Birkirkara, on the other hand, collected just three points from the last four matches as they defeated Balzan, losing to Mosta, Marsaxlokk and Naxxar Lions with identical 0-2 scores. The defeat to Naxxar led to the resignation of Giovanni Tedesco and interim coach Brian Chetcuti will be replacing him, at least until the end of the year. The Stripes share the eighth place with Mosta, Valletta and Balzan on 10 points, three behind the three teams in third place.

At the National Stadium, kick-off at 16:15, Balzan take on bottom-placed Sirens.

Balzan lost three out of the last five matches to Naxxar, Birkirkirkara and Floriana, defeating Hibernians 2-0 and rescuing a point in a 2-2 draw with Gudja United last week. They share the eighth place with Mosta, Valletta and Birkirkara. Sirens, on the other hand, lie at the bottom of the table with just two points from eight matches, losing five out of the last six matches.
