Late Lecao goal sinks Marsaxlokk

Gzira United left it till late to beat Marsaxlokk 1-0 in a match from the 360Sports Malta Premier at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday.

The two teams shared the exchanges throughout the ninety minutes but with one minute to go, Gzira scored the all-important goal which handed them the three points.

Marsaxlokk had Jefferson, Ulises Arias, Lucas Lopes and Alex Tanque making their first league appearance while Enmy Pena, Igor Goularte and Patrick Nonato were included as substitutes.  On the other hand, making their debut for the Maroons were Enrico Pepe, Faysal Chouaib and Christian Ebisindor Saint. Lecao and Joseph Minala, who joined the club earlier this week, were drafted in during the second half. 

Thaylor had a goal-bound effort blocked into a corner and then went close with a header which ended just wide but Marsaxlokk replied with a Leandro Aguirre frekick and an angled shot by Duane Bonnici which were parried by goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov.

Three minutes in the second half, Marko Drobnjak blocked a powerful shot from the left by Christian Ebisindor Saint and four minutes later, the Marsaxlokk custodian with another save at point blank on Brooklyn Borg. 

The Maroons notched the winner one minute from time when Thaylor concluded a great solo run with an assist for substitute Lecao who placed the ball home past the helpless Drobnjak.
