Gzira United registered a third win in four matches as they beat Melita 3-2 in a match from the 360Sports Malta Premier at the National Stadium on Saturday.
A win which puts the Maroons in second place, one point behind leaders Birkirkara and two ahead of Sliema, Hamrun and Hibernians but the Wanderers and the Spartans have a game in hand. For Melita, this was the second successive defeat.
Gzira managed to take the lead on 19 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Marc Van de Bovenkamp Font floored Thaylor inside the area and from the penalty spot, Gabriel Bohrer Mentz converted.
However, before the end of the first half – two minutes in added time, Melita equalised when Jean Pierre Attard delivered a cross from the right and Aldair Simanca headed the ball home from close range.
Gzira regained the lead on 61 minutes when Marcelo Dias served Thaylor on the right and the latter rounded two defenders before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Gosef Mizzi.
The Maroons extended the lead on 72 minutes when Thaylor pounced on a through pass on the left and advanced upfield before rounding the goalkeeper and placing the ball at the back of the net.
Melita reduced the gap on 78 minutes courtesy of substitute David Xuereb who headed the ball home off an Alan Borg Olivier long-distance freekick from the right.
