The BOV Super Cup will be at stake on Friday as champions Hamrun Spartans face FA Trophy winners Sliema Wanderers in the final at the National Stadium, kick-off at 17:00.
It will be the first official honour of the season 2024/25 although the two teams have already faced each other in August with Sliema beating Hamrun 2-1 in the Pre-Season Summer Cup organised by the Malta FA.
The two teams’ performances so far this season were different as the Blues were quite consistent, staying in the hunt of 360Sports Malta Premier leaders Birkirkara and second-placed Floriana while Hamrun Spartans had a disappointing start, going through a bad patch of four successive defeats but they recovered well in recent weeks with three wins out of the last four matches.
The Spartans won the competition on three consecutive years between 1987 and 1989. They defeating Valletta 3-0 in 1987, Sliema 1-0 after extra-time in 1988 and Sliema once again in 1989 on penalties following a 3-3 draw after extra-time. They won the competition once again in 1991 and 1992, defeating Valletta on both occasions – on penalties following a 1-1 draw in 1991 and 2-0 in 1992. Last year, they defeated Birkirkara 4-0 to claim their sixth Super Cup.
The Wanderers lost the 1988 final to Hamrun 0-1 after extra-time, to Hamrun in 1989 on penalties and 0-3 to Valletta in 1990. They registered their first win in 1996, defeating Valletta on penalties following a goalless draw. They won the Super Cup again in 2000, defeating BIrkirkara 3-0. In 2001, they lost 1-2 to Valletta and between 2003 and 2005, they lost the competition to Birkirkara three times – 0-2 in 2003, 1-3 after extra-time in 2004 and 0-3 in 2005. Sliema registered their third Super Cup win in 2009, defeating Hibernians 1-0 but in their last Super Cup final appearance in 2016, they lost 1-2 to Valletta.
