Victoria Hotspurs, Zurrieq and Qrendi were the first three teams to reach the Round of 16 of the Meridianbet FA Trophy as the Round of 32 got underway on Friday.
At the Gozo Stadium, VIctoria Hotspurs defeated Xaghra United 5-1. Ferdinando Apap put the Hotspurs ahead on 9 minutes and Rodinely doubled the score nine minutes later. Kurt Borg extended the lead on 31 minutes but a minute later, Lucas Farrugia reduced the gap for Xaghra. However, Borg scored again on 52 minutes and Emmanuel Mbong made it 5-1 nine minutes from time.
In the next round, the Hotspurs will be facing the winner of the clash between Floriana and Xewkija Tigers.
A penalty three minutes in the second half of extra-time enabled Zurrieq to beat Mellieha 1-0 at the Centenary Stadium.
Zurrieq will be facing Melita or Naxxar Lions in the Round of 16.
In anoher match at the Centenary Stadium, Amateur League side Qrendi defeated Challenge League side Sirens 2-0. Leo Salgado put Qrendi ahead on 36 minutes and ten minutes in the second half, CHristian Joseph Degabriele doubled the score.
Qrendi will be meeting Marsaxlokk or Mosta in the next round.
Round of 16 matches are scheduled for February 4 to 6. The quarter-finals should be played on March 4 and 5, the semi-finals on May 10 and 11 or 13 and 14 the final on May 17 or 18.
