One team between Balzan and Naxxar Lions will be relegated to the Challenge League on Saturday as the final two matches from the 360Sports Malta Premier Closing Round Bottom 6 matches are played at the National Stadium and the Tony Bezzina Stadium.
As things stand, Gzira United and Naxxar Lions are joint-third from bottom on 19 points, followed by Balzan on 16 and Melita on 10. By ending their commitments in one of the bottom two places, Melita will be taking part in the Relegation Play-Out. The other team would be determined from the clash between Balzan and Naxxar Lions at the National Stadium.
Balzan and Naxxar had ended their commitments in the bottom two places in the Opening Round and therefore the team which finished second from bottom in this round will be automatically relegated to the Challenge League. The other team would face Melita in the Relegation Play-Out.
Naxxar Lions just need to avoid losing to Balzan to avoid automatic relegation and set-up a clash with Melita with Balzan being relegated to the Challenge League. On the other hand, a win for Balzan would send Naxxar Lions to the Challenge League as Balzan would have a better record in the direct encounters with Naxxar.
In fact, although there is a possibility of Gzira United ending on level points with Balzan and Naxxar Lions, in case of a defeat to Melita, the Maroons have the second best record in the direct encounters among the three teams with Naxxar being relegated to the Challenge League.
