Malta FA and BOV sign agreement for naming rights of Member Associations competitions

The Malta FA would like to announce that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bank of Valletta plc (BOV) over the naming rights of eight Member Associations’ competitions.

The agreement will see the introduction of BOV in the names of the different competitions during the 2025/26 season. As a result, the leagues shall be named: BOV GIDA League, ISA BOV League, BOV Veterans FA Trophy, BOV MESA League Division 1, BOV Masters League, BOV MAFA 70th Anniversary Cup, IASC BOV Super Cup, and BOV SWAN Leagues.

This was confirmed during a signing ceremony at Centenary Hall, whereby the agreement was signed by Malta FA General Secretary Dr Maria Azzopardi, BOV Chief Operating Officer Ernest Agius, and President of the Member Associations Standing Committee Lawrence Aquilina, on behalf of their respective organisations and committees. Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo and Senior Vice President Dr Matthew Paris were also present for the event.

BOV has had a long-standing relationship with the Malta FA, having already supported a number of competitions over the years. This sponsorship will see an extension of that support, emphasising the bank’s vision to strengthen community ties through sport.

Commenting on the agreement, Dr Paris remarked: “Recreational football is a key pillar for the Malta Football Association, forming the heart of community football across the islands. The Malta FA invests approximately €130,000 annually to ensure that all recreational matches are played in safe facilities equipped with top-quality artificial pitches.”

“The partnership with Bank of Valletta further strengths this commitment by providing financial assistance to participating associations. BOV has long been an important and trusted partner, and the Malta FA expresses its sincere thanks for the bank’s continued support,” he added.

In his comments, Mr Agius stated: “At Bank of Valletta, we believe that football is much more than a sport – it is a catalyst for personal growth, community cohesion, and national pride. Our support for these eight Member Association competitions reflects our deep commitment to nurturing talent, encouraging healthier lifestyles, and promoting inclusivity across all age groups.”

“We are proud to stand alongside the Malta Football Association in making football truly accessible for all, and in doing so, contributing to a stronger, more resilient Malta,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the Member Associations Standing Committee, Mr Aquilina expressed gratitude to the Malta FA for its assistance in the agreement with BOV. “As a result, Member Associations receive financial assistance that allows them to alleviate some of the annual expenses incurred,” he continued.

“This is something that Member Associations welcome with open arms. Once again, we thank the Malta FA and BOV for their assistance,” Mr Aquilina added.
