Malta FA Jubilee Cup: Marsaxlokk, Sliema and Zebbug through to quarter-finals

Mosta, Tarxien Rainbows and Zabbar St. Patrick reached the quarter-finals of the Malta FA Jubilee Cup as another three matches from the Round of 16 were played on Thursday.

At the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Mosta defeated Zurrieq 6-5 on penalties following a goalless draw.

Mosta had goalkeeper David Udoh Akpan sent off after just eighteen minutes, leaving his side in ten men.

Leo Fernandes,Quelmer Hurtado, Jake Vassallo, Joao Victor, Prince Chibuzor Emmanuel and Aiden Agius scored for Mosta with Daniel GTA the only one to fail to score. On the other hand, for Zurrieq, Jonathan Monney, Anderson de Barros, Glamour Eziefula Chibueze, Jhoel Sarraude and Brendan Schneider scored with Brite Ihuomah and Darren Borg having their penalties saved by goalkeeper Jayden Farrugia.   

In the quarter-finals, Mosta meet Sliema Wanderers.

At the Centenary Stadium, Tarxien Rainbows also needed the penalty shoot-out to beatdefeating Gżira United 7-6 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the end of the ninety minutes.  

In the quarter-finals, the Rainbows will be meeting Marsaxlokk. 

The two teams shared the exchanges for long stretches. In fact, shots at goal were few and far between.

On the half hour, Gżira managed to take the lead. David Xuereb received an assist from the right and with a brilliant drive.

However, the Rainbows were awarded a penalty on 62 minutes for a foul by Miguel D’Alessandro on Jai Quitongo. The decision was confirmed by FVS and Wallisson Bahia converted from the penalty spot. 

Tarxien were reduced to ten men one minute in added time after Miguel D’Alessandro received a second yellow card.

With the score sill draw, the penalty shoot-out had to determine the winner. 

Gabriel Bohrer Mentz, Clayton Failla, David Xuereb, Jork Becerra, Santiago Martinez scored for Gzira with Kante’s effort hitting the crossbar and Andy Borg had the penalty saved by goalkeeper Miguel Spiteri. 

Erico Junior, Rafael Tavares, Wallison Bahia, Marcus Grima, Tavinho, Andreas Vella and Sheldon Mizzi scored with Gabriel Vella hitting sky high. 

Tarxien will be facing Marsaxlokk in the next stage.

At the Centenary Stadium,  Zabbar defeated Naxxar Lions 4-2.

Naxxar managed to take the lead on 24 minutes when Cedric Kontchou received an assist by Rosiel from the left and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Jonathan Grech.

Żabbar levelled matters on 32 minutes courtesy of Haroun Tchaouna who received the ball just outside the area and with a well-placed shot from the left beat goalkeeper Matthias Debono.

Żabbar took the lead on 47 minutes thanks to Ryan Sclcluna whose fine rising shot from the right beat goalkeeper Debono.

Naxxar equalised on 63 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Toni Brito brought Rosiel down inside the area. A decision which was confirmed by FVS review and Gabriel Costa made no mistake from the penalty spot. 

The Saints regained the lead on 72 minutes when off a cross by Jurgen Pisani from the left, Mario Fontanella beat the Naxxar goalkeeper from close range.

Four minutes later, Żabbar added another to seal the issue. Fontanella provided the assist from the right and Pedro Cejas controlled before slotting the ball past Debono.

Zabbar will face Zebbug Rangers in the next round.
