The Malta Football Association announces that preparations for the Ta’ Qali Football Complex Masterplan are well underway, with the work of the Masterplan Committee in full swing.
This project follows the successful completion of the National Football Centre at the Malta FA Training Grounds, a project that cost a total of €15 million, offering several facilities such as a 400-seater, Category 1 stadium compliant with UEFA requirements, a medical and sports science area, a relaxation zone for players, an administrative area, and more.

The committee has been tasked with reviewing and proposing the necessary improvements, within the Ta’ Qali Sports Complex, which area corresponds to circa100,000m2, namely in the following segments:
- The National Stadium
- The Centenary Stadium
- The Training Grounds
- The Parking Facilities

The committee’s work will encompass the financial, legal, planning, and regulatory feasibility of the project to ensure that the Malta FA General Assembly, scheduled for April 2026, is fully and properly informed about all aspects of the proposed development. Following a broad consultation process with all relevant stakeholders, the Masterplan will be formally submitted to the General Assembly for consideration and endorsement.
The outcome of this process is expected to deliver a sustainable, eco-friendly sports complex with upgraded and modern facilities. These include enhanced spectator tribunes, improved sporting infrastructure, the development of complementary commercial facilities, the maximisation of the Centenary Stadium through increased spectator capacity, and the potential development of an additional training pitch.
The committee, chaired by Senior Vice President Dr Matthew Paris, is composed of a blend of technocrats, professionals, and practitioners, and is being supported by external consultants.
The improvement of football infrastructure and facilities has been a cornerstone of the vision presented by MFA President Bjorn Vassallo in his 2019 election proposals. The time is now ripe to translate those written proposals into meaningful and tangible development, reflecting the Association’s long-term commitment to the growth and modernisation of Maltese football.
In a brief statement, Dr Paris remarked: “This is the biggest infrastructural investment that the Association will be making in its 125-year history. The multi-million-euro project is primarily aimed at providing improved sporting facilities, offering a better supporter experience, and creating commercial opportunities to help the Association deliver this ambitious initiative.”
“The sporting public deserves this project. Maltese football has been calling out for facilities of this level, and the Malta FA is fully committed to delivering it in the shortest time possible,” Dr Paris continued.
A key aspect of the brief places eco-friendly development at the heart of the masterplan, ensuring that all works adhere not only to modern environmental standards but also prioritise sustainability and long-term environmental considerations.
Concluding, Dr Paris stated: “This project must be thought out carefully — we need to get it right on all fronts. It represents an investment that should serve the country for at least the next 40 years, addressing today’s needs while also preparing for future generations.”
