The Malta Football Association welcomes the publication of Legal Notice 91 of 2026, through which sports clubs in Malta may now operate as sports companies through a dedicated commercial vehicle. This development is expected to provide clubs with much-needed financial injection and stability, while enabling them to compete on a more level playing field with their foreign counterparts.
The publication of this legislation represents the culmination of a concerted effort by numerous stakeholders, both internal and external. The MFA takes this opportunity to thank all those involved in the process, in particular the respective Ministries that supported and endorsed the legislative proposal. The discussions on behalf of the Malta FA were led by Senior Vice President Dr Matthew Paris, whilst the Malta Premier League (MPL) was represented by its Chairperson Dr Joseph Muscat.
Commenting on this initiative, Bjorn Vassallo, President of the Malta FA, stated that when stakeholders work together, meaningful progress can be achieved. “This is one such case, with the Malta FA and the MPL working side by side to ensure that clubs become more sustainable and less volatile.”
The Malta FA will now proceed to publish the internal conversion mechanisms applicable to football clubs, with a view to ensuring that the transition from their current structures to commercial vehicles is carried out in a smooth and efficient manner.
